Effectiveness of Hermetic Storage Using PICS Bags and Plastic Jars for Post-Harvest Preservation of <i>Acacia macrostachya</i> Seeds

In Burkina Faso, the availability of Acacia macrostachya “Zamnè” seeds throughout year is threatened by attacks pests. So, effectiveness airtight (hermetic) storage for preservation these was evaluated using 20-litre plastic jars and 50 kg PICS bags as hermetic containers with polypropylene controls. Seeds (17.5 kg) were stored in each devices six months under ambient conditions laboratory. The number pest Bruchidius silaceus increased significantly from 235 to 715 individuals on average/500 g seeds. But drums, this did not vary (191 239 respectively). both devices, we found few another major Caryedon furcatus. However, bags, haboured more pests’ addition high numbers C. furcatus Oryzaephilus mercator which devices. damage weight loss 7.40% 20.23% 0.50% 3% respectively compared jars. germination rate A. decreased average percentages 14%; 11% 15% initial 27%. are therefore effective preserving quality seeds, but effects seed viability need be explored further.
